Based in Central London for over 15 years, serving the communities of Hackney, Shoreditch and Mildmay.  We provide an advice service for homeless people and follow-up tenancy support throughout London. Volunteer employment training.  Educational and recreational activities for Young People in the community.

Gems FC - Football Club 

Gems FC (founded 2001) is registered with the London Football Association.

Qualified coaching sessions at Shoreditch or Haggerston Park or the Britannia Leisure Centre.

  • 2002-2003 Gems U14's played in the Camden & Islington Football League.
  • 2003-2004 Gems U18's were runners-up in the London Electricity Saturday Youth League Cup Final and Joint 2nd position in the league tables.
  • 2004-2005 Joint 2nd league position with Junior Hammers in the ELE - East London and Essex Junior Football League and winners of the U15's Divisional Cup.
  • 2004-2005 – Winners of the first Hackney Youth League Unity Cup.
  • 2005-2006 Gained 1st position in the U16's ELE Junior Football league tables with a run of 18 inspiring games that season (see link above).
  • 2007-2009 training sessions from 10 am Saturday mornings as part of our Community Programme in the U16 age category. FA qualified coach.
  • 2008-2009 Gems U15 played in Sports Network League with local teams from Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets and South London including friendly, league and County Shield matches 2007-2009 with Juva; Clapham Park United; Mile End United and Social Organisation for Unity and Leisure (Soul FC).
  • 2009-2010 Gems U16’s return to the Camden & Islington Football League in fixtures with Angel Islington U15, Futebol De Salao U15, Islington Admiral Youth U15, Jubba Youth U16, Lyndhurst U15, Lyndhurst U16, N4 United U15, New Orleans U16, NL Eagles U16 & Paradise Panthers U15

We provide general housing advice, short term accommodation referrals to hostels and housing schemes e.g. independent co-ops, housing association or supported housing.  Follow-up resettlement support with home visits and key working sessions, basic provisions if available and tenancy support.

For information on issues relating to homelessness, contact your local homelessness forum. If you think you may be put into a homeless situation it is always best to register with your local council housing department in the first instance.

Both Hackney and Islington have developing forums for statutory and voluntary sector partnership working. Youth Services

We welcome the assistance of volunteer football coaches for Gems FC.  FA level 1 or 2 and experience of training at a mature level.  Training is on Saturday mornings from 10 am.  

Donations of : Sports equipment, lesson materials, software, music instruments for educational activities such as Music Workshops or IT training supported by teacher training when available.

Gems Music Workshop  

Available Tuesday evenings from 7 pm - 9.00 pm or Saturdays at the Mayville Community Centre, Woodville Road (off Mildmay Road, London N16 8NA by arrangement.

Piano, guitar, drums, music theory lessons, singing, song writing and studio recording available.

Music technology training and instrumental workshops to compose, play and record your favourite pieces.

Enrolment is by application form, from the link  below, suggested contributions are £1 per session towards costs and volunteer expenses and £4 for a finished CD.

Dance Lessons

 

Dancing lessons 2001-2005 completed with appearances in the Hoxton Street Festival, the Mayville Community Centre, Past, Present & Future Show and a Parents show at SPACe performing Art Centre. Thanks to members of SPACe Studios, Falkirk Street, for some friendly management and encouragement.

 

No Limits – the all boys dance group, combined an excellent routine of rap and dance at the 2005 Newington Green Festival.

 

IT Project

 

We are recruiting for a one year part paid (3 hours per week) / part voluntary post for IT Tutor to support visitors to a new UK Online Centre in partnership with the Canalside Residents Association Community Centre at Bolt House in Hoxton.  You will help young or elderly people alike to embark on a User Journey with UK Online. Type in N1 5NU on the UK Online website or in google to find us.

There are 19 user friendly courses to choose, from basic to more advanced.  Drop-in sessions hours will be Wednesdays from 4 – 7 pm and other times according to your availability can be arranged.

Together with a local Area Trust we developed an Information Technology Youth Room at the Haggerston Community Centre with help from Connexions, Hackney Community Chest, City & Hackney Primary Care Trust, and Focus UK Online.

The project ran from 2002 - 2004 where students aged from 8 - 16 were taught Microsoft Office ( Word, Excel and Database) skills, help with homework and research and Web Design with Alia. Computer games were provided as a special treat by Focus UK Online. To register interest in further IT projects please through the Application Form link above. If under 18 you will need to obtain parental consent.

Haggerston Community Centre, is now part of a future redevelopment, although meetings of the local Tenants and Residents Association - HAWK TRA - still take place

 

Activities & Volunteering

If you want to join Gems FC or any other activity please download Gems Application Form for posting or emailing. For U16 a parents or guardians signature is required.

If you want to Volunteer for any of the activities or housing advisor roles, please download Gems Volunteer Application Form or contact one of the Volunteer Agencies listed below.  All volunteers will need to have or apply for a CRB check.  This is the  industry Government standard for the prevention of abuse to the young, elderly or other vulnerable adults.  This may be obtained from your local Community Voluntary Service, University / College, Church or other accredited organisation. 

Gems is engaged with the Local Tenants and Residents Association, Single Homeless Forum, Vulnerable Persons Providers Forum and we currently participate in a Sports Development Committee and the Hackney Football Partnership held the first Thursday of each month to maintain youth activities in the area.

Gems Outreach is a voluntary, non-profit organisation.

Homeless drop-in centres have now been replaced by housing advice and advocacy work.

Through volunteering we provide on the job training in housing or youth work leading to greater employment opportunities.

We WELCOME sponsorship and donations, from members of the public, organisations and Trusts wishing to help us provide these services to keep young people occupied and motivated and provide valuable employment in the community.
